Dog Ear Infection Prevention

Roughly 10% of dogs suffer from some form of an ear infection every year. All the head shaking caused by the discomfort can lead to other issues too. Our blue Weimaraner, Gracie, would shake her head so hard that she would break the skin on the tips of her ears and splatter blood EVERYWHERE! Our walls looked like something straight out of a horror film. She shook her head so hard that she broke blood vessels and needed to be treated for ear hematomas. The vet bills associated with treating these very preventable issues added up, plus the severe discomfort led me to researching how to prevent it in the first place.

There are several different strains of bacteria and yeast that are the typical cause of ear infections.  They all need a certain environment to thrive, which consists of a moist and dirty ear.  If these elements are not there then the bacteria and yeast cannot survive, and infections will be prevented.

Ear Infection Prevention

There are THREE main elements to reducing the probability
of getting an ear infection.

 1. Keep their ears clean. Dirt, debris, and wax build up can introduce and provide bacteria and yeast a perfect place to grow.

b. Auralief 5in1Dog Wash is effective at cleaning all of your pup. Having an overall clean coat helps ensure dirt and debris don’t migrate into the ear. Coming Soon

2. Remove excess moisture in the ear. Bacteria and yeast need a humid environment to propagate. Excess moisture can build up in the ear canal, especially in floppy eared dogs or dogs that swim a lot or live in a very humid environment.

Our Solutions:
a. Auralief Ear Cleaner is effective at drying out the ear.

3. Maintain a healthy immune system.

If your dog is excessively shaking their head, has redness and inflamed ears, or has a mild odor coming from the ears you should see your veterinarian soon for care.  Most likely the ear is already infected and the only way to cure it once infected is with veterinarian prescribed medications.
